How I Became a Dance Mom x3: The Reality of Competitive Dance Life

If someone had told me years ago that I’d become a dance mom to three girls, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.

Back then, I had just one child. I remember reading an article about how expensive extracurricular activities could be and thinking, “That’s wild — I’d never spend that much.”

And yet… here I am.

Fully immersed in competitive dance mom life, juggling schedules, finances, emotions, and a whole lot of love.

Dance starts small.

One class turns into two.
Two turns into rehearsals.
Then competitions, costumes, makeup, travel, and late nights.

Now my reality looks like this:

  • One daughter dances three days a week
  • One dances two days a week
  • One dances once a week

Altogether, we’re at the studio four days a week, often starting as early as 4PM — long before a typical 9–5 workday ends.

If I didn’t work for myself, this simply wouldn’t be possible.

Yes — competitive dance is expensive.

Even when families try to keep costs low, it adds up quickly. We stick to the minimum number of competitions and skip extras whenever possible, but the financial commitment is real.

Still, the biggest cost isn’t money.

It’s time.

Dance has changed our family dynamic:

  • Fewer vacations
  • Less downtime together
  • A calendar that revolves around rehearsals

Some weeks feel overwhelming.

And some weeks I honestly say, “I can’t do this anymore.”

When Motherhood Meets Freelance Life

As a work-from-home mom and freelancer, my income isn’t always predictable. That makes supporting competitive dance feel scary at times.

There are moments where I feel like:

  • My career goals are paused
  • My personal growth is slower
  • My time is stretched thin

Between school pickups and dance drop-offs four days a week, it’s hard not to feel like my dreams sometimes sit on the back burner.

And yet — I haven’t pulled them out.

Because dance has given my girls something powerful.

They’ve learned:

  • Discipline
  • Commitment
  • Confidence
  • Teamwork

They’ve built friendships.
They have community.
They belong.

This isn’t just an activity anymore — it’s a world they’ve created for themselves.

And that matters.

This is something I want every mom to hear:

You can be proud of your children
and struggling as a parent
at the same time.

Both can exist.

I’m proud of my girls — deeply.
And I’m also tired, stretched, and figuring it out month by month.

That doesn’t make me weak.
It makes me human.
